1 item (originally enclosed in Consul Cooper's despatch number 20, 2 March 1857) extracted from FO 13/356. Brazil. [Admiralty chart 1078] and part of [Admiralty chart 1079] joined to form a map of the north-eastern coast between São Luís and Estância. Compass indicator; west at the top. [Surveyed by Baron Roussin, 1820; ?revised to 1857]. Insets: charts of Maceió, Pernambuco (i.e. Recife) harbour, the Rio Grande do Norte, the Aracati (or Jaguaribe) River, the mouth of the River Paraiba, and the Bay of Ceará; views of parts of the coast. MS addition: chart of Las Rocas. A sheet affixed to the face of this base map bears the following: 'Map Shewing the First Section of the Recife & San Francisco Railway - Pernambuco - 1853 - M.A. Borthwick, Engineer'. Reference note to the proposed line of the railway. Scale: 1 inch to 6 miles [1:380,160]. Surveyed by Alfred Mornay; lithographed by C F Cheffins. Inset: map of eastern Brazil. Another sheet affixed to the base map bears the MS title: 'Chart of the consulate of Pernambuco including the ports of Pernambuco, Paraiba, Maceio, Rio Grande, Aracati and Ceara; the Roccas, and a map of the line of Railway'.
