Hampshire: Portsmouth. 5 sheets of plans and sections of defences, including a proposed seafront battery at Southsea Point, intended to replace an existing 33-gun battery fallen into a state of disrepair. (1, 5) Two copies of a plan showing proposed alterations to the Old Tower, with its ditch and covered way, and the proposed battery; also showing the range of fire from the battery, relative to the passage of vessels entering and leaving Portsmouth Harbour. (2) Plan of the proposed battery and its immediate environs. (3) Section through the battery and Southsea Castle. (4) Map showing Southsea Castle, the proposed battery and other proposed defences along the sea coasts of Gosport and Portsmouth, with the battery's range of fire relative to the passage of vessels in and out of Portsmouth Harbour. Scale: (1, 5) 1 inch to 50 feet [1:600]; (2) 1 inch to 100 feet [1:1,200]; (3) 1 inch to 15 feet [1:180]; (4) 1 inch to 400 feet [1:4,800]. Compass indicators to items (1-2) and (4-5). Each item signed by Lieutenant John Evelegh, Royal Engineers: items (1) and (5) dated 1 November 1802; items (2-4) dated 1 December 1800. An additional note to item (4) states that this map was loaned by John Rowley to Major General Fisher, 19 October 1812; and returned to the office of the Inspector General of Fortifications on 17 December 1812. Dimensions: (1) 127.5 cm x 75.5 cm; (2) 76 cm x 62 cm; (3) 31.5 cm x 126.5 cm; (4) 66 cm x 108.5 cm; (5) 131 cm x 76.5 cm.
