Kent: Dover. 13 sheets of plans, elevations and sections showing alterations proposed to be carried out at Dover Castle in the years 1856-1857. (1) Plan and section of the spur caponier [i.e covered passageway]. (2) Plans, elevations and sections of a parapet between the East battery and the cliffs. (3) Sections and elevations of the East Arrow outwork. (4) Plan of the East Arrow outwork, the East demi-bastion and the adjoining counterguard [i.e. defensive rampart]. (5-7) Three sheets of sections of the Avranches outwork. (8) Plan of the Avranches outwork and the main ditch to the spur caponier. (9-12) Four sheets of sections of Hudson's outwork. (13) Plan of the north-east side of the castle. Reference tables to items (1, 3-7, 9-12). Scale: (1) 1 inch to 10 feet [1:120] (plan), 1 inch to 5 feet [1:60] (section); (2-12) 1 inch to 20 feet [1:240]; (13) 1 inch to 50 feet [1:600]. All items signed by Colonel C O Streatfield, Commanding Royal Engineer. Items (1-12) also signed by Captain B H Martindale; item (1) also signed by Lieutenant M C Molesworth; item (2) also signed by Lieutenant E O Hewett; item (13) also signed by Lieutenant J A Papillon; all of the Royal Engineers. Items (3-4) also signed by W J Fernel, Clerk of Works; items (5-8) also signed by G Arnold; items (9-12) also signed by G W Booth. Small overlays, showing alterations, are affixed to the faces of items (9-12). Dimensions: (1) 56 cm x 85.5 cm; (2) 55.5 cm x 83.5 cm; (3) 45 cm x 105.5 cm; (4) 72 cm x 89 cm; (5) 28 cm x 170 cm; (6) 44 cm x 56.5 cm; (7) 76 cm x 106.5 cm; (8) 76 cm x 106.5 cm; (9) 55.5 cm x 86 cm; (10) 86.5 cm x 88 cm; (11) 87 cm x 132 cm; (12) 86.5 cm x 88 cm; (13) 56.5 cm x 132 cm. All items originally enclosed in a letter from Colonel Streatfield to the Inspector General of Fortifications, 25 April 1856; the letter is not preserved on this roll.
