3 items (originally accompanying James A Longridge's report on the Calcutta and South-Eastern Railway, 1857) extracted from CO 167/408 (folios 463-465). India: Bengal. 1 map and 2 sheets of sections. (1) 'Calcutta and South Eastern Railway: sketch map': showing a proposed railway line from Calcutta (Kolkata) to the Matla River, with extensions to Dhaka and Kushtia (both now in Bangladesh) and a branch line across the Hugli [Hoogly] River and Sundarbans Navigation. Reference table. Scale: 1 inch to 8 miles [1:506,880]. Compass star. Lithographed by Waterlow and Sons. (2) Sheet bearing a cross-section of the Hugli [Hoogly] River from Calcutta Mint to Middleton Point, and a 60-mile cross-section of the Matla River, both showing low-water spring tides. Horizontal scale: 1 inch to 2 miles [1:126,720]; vertical scale: 1 inch to 30 feet [1:120]. (3) Cross section showing 30-foot shoals in the Matla and Hugli Rivers. Horizontal scale: 1 inch to 1,500 yards [1:54,000]; vertical scale: 1 inch to 5 fathoms [1:360]. Dimensions: (1) 60 cm x 71 cm; (2) 39 cm x 131 cm; (3) 29 cm x 89 cm. Longridge's report was enclosed in Mauritius [despatch] number 377, 19 April 1858.
