1608
Gloucestershire: Forest of Dean. 'Th[e Wes]t Pa[rt]of t[he P]l[otte] of the Forrest of D[e]ane [in] the C[ountie] of G[loucester] Taken A[nn]o Dni [16]08 Anno regni [regi]s Jacobi Sexto'. Map of the area between the rivers Wye and [?Severn], showing waterways, woodlands, fields (some occupiers and acreages), roads, mines, bailiwicks and buildings. Title in fretwork cartouche. Royal coat of arms, below which appears in pencil: 'Beati Pacifici'. Compass rose, with cross: assuming the cross points east, the map would be oriented to the east, but this appears not to correspond to the relative positions of named rivers. Scale bar in fretwork cartouche and surmounted by dividers and motto: 'Per artem et multos labores perfectus sum'. Almost certainly drawn by Richard Bankes. Originally sheets of varying sizes, joined to form a single map. Red and black pencilled grid lines.
For Bankes's map of Sherwood Forest, see MR 1/1142
