Description

9 items (originally accompanying returns called for in a letter from Mr Byham, Secretary of the Board of Ordnance, 14 May 1830) extracted from WO 55/2657. Hampshire and Dorset. Plans of Ordnance property, showing buildings and boundaries: (1) in and around Portsmouth; (2) at Fort Cumberland, Portsmouth; (3) at Hilsea, near Portsmouth; (4) at barracks near Sandown Fort, Isle of Wight; (5) at Cowes Castle, Isle of Wight, also showing neighbouring landowners; (6) at Calshot Castle, also showing high and low water marks; (7) at Hurst Castle; (8) at Portland Castle, also showing the low water mark; (9) at Yarmouth Castle and harbour, Isle of Wight. Reference tables to items (1) and (7). Scale: (1) 1 inch to 200 feet [1:2,400]; (2) 1 inch to 300 feet [1:3,600]; (3) 1 inch to about 108 yards [1:3,888]; (4) 1 inch to 40 feet [1:480]; (5, 8-9) 1 inch to 20 feet [1:240]; (6) 1 inch to 100 feet [1:1,200]; (7) 1 inch to 50 feet [1:600]. Compass indicators to items (1) and (8). All items drawn at the Royal Engineers' Office, Portsmouth; and signed by Colonel W Durnford, 27 February 1833. Inset to item (4) plan of Sandown Fort; reference table; scale: 1 inch to 100 feet [1:1,200]. Dimensions: (1) 103 cm x 163 cm; (2) 43 cm x 52 cm; (3) 63 cm x 77 cm; (4) 45 cm x 23 cm; (5) 40 cm x 49 cm; (6) 40 cm x 74 cm; (7) 45 cm x 55 cm; (8) 62 cm x 59 cm; (9) 44 cm x 52 cm.
