France: Lens. A single sheet bearing the following plan and drawings, relating to the French victory under Louis de Bourbon, Duc d'Enghien, against Spanish forces, under Archduke Leopold of Austria, 20 August 1648, part of the Thirty Years' War. (i) The upper portion of the sheet: view of part of the action; framed by an oval wreath of foliage and surmounted by an empty oval cartouche, apparently intended to contain a portrait of the Duke of Enghien. (ii) The lower portion: plan showing the order of battle between the opposing forces, detailing army units and commanders' names; cartouche in the form of a lion skin. (iii) Between the two main scenes: views of Furnes (Veurne) and Ypres (Ieper; both now in Belgium); each in a baroque cartouche. [By] le Sieur de Beaulieu, Engineer; engraved by Nicolas Cochin and Jean Frosne. Much of the upper edge of this sheet has perished, making it impossible to reconstruct most of the title.
