Description

Freiburg im Breisgau and Philippsburg (now in Baden Württemberg, Germany). 'La glorieuse campagne de Monseigneur le Duc d'Anguyen commandant les armees de Louis xiiij Roy de France et de Navarre, ...': a single sheet bearing the following plan and drawings, relating to French victories, under Louis de Bourbon, Duc d'Enghien, over Bavarian and Imperial forces during the Thirty Years' War: (i) on the upper half: plan of the area surrounding the fortifications of Philippsburg, covering land as far away as Germersheim, showing troops drawn up inside the town walls during the siege of 1644. Surrounded by a wreath of foliage. Scale: 1 cm to 48.5 toises. (ii) Set within the foliage surrounding (i): a portrait of the Duke of Enghien and views of twelve other towns taken by French forces, with their dates they were captured: Bacharach, Baden-Baden, Bad Kreuznach, Bingen, Durlach (now part of Karlsruhe), Landau, Lichtenau, Mainz, Neustadt, Oppenheim, Speyer and Worms. (iii) On the lower half of the sheet. 'Les combatz donnez devant la Ville et Chasteau du Fribourg en Brisgaui ...': panoramic view of the town and castle of Freiburg, with surrounding countryside and mountains, showing defences, and troops within and outside of the walls, during the attacks of 3, 5, 10 August 1644. Surrounded by decorative drapery. [The whole sheet by] de Beaulieu, Engineer; engraved by [Nicolas] Cochin and [Stefano della] Bella.
