Administrative / biographical background

In 1944 a separate International Relations Department was set up to deal with the International aspects of colonial policy. Subsequently it was given responsibility for dealing with the United Nations Organisation and its specialist agencies on colonial matters. In 1962 it merged with the General Department to become the International Relations and General Department. The department became the International and General Department in the Commonwealth Office in 1966.
