Description

France: Group Eberbach proposed 7th Army to be responsible for ferrying, and 5th Panzer Army for defensive front from Chartres westwards, and that Staff of Panzer Group Eberbach be disbanded, Aug 16; German appreciation of Aug 16, Allies intention to seize traffic and supply centre Paris with US Army group, increased pressure south of Caen might indicate intention to reach Lower Seine; unconfirmed report to CinC West of Allied air landing at Paris, Aug 18; Group Eberbach reported severe defensive fighting north of Argentan; CinC West ordered by Berlin to ensure no long range combat installation fall into Allied hands in condition from which technique could be deduced Aug 17; demolition operation Toulon carried out by Naval Officer in Command, Aug 18; Army Group C report German attack at Draguignan slowed up by destruction of Rhone bridges, expectation of Allied turn in direction of Toulon.

Naval Headlines: German 2nd Battle Group, including cruiser Luetzow and number of Elbing class destroyers to go to Gulf of Riga from Gdynia; Admiral Atlantic reported 64th Army Corps decision that St Jean de Luz and Bayonne be given up, orders for U-boat base and dockyards requested from Group West; Group West ordered incorporation of all naval personnel into army, La Pallice, La Rochelle, both sides of Gironde, and Bordeaux to be held; intention of Admiral Atlantic to move HQ to 64th Army Corps at Poitiers for joint control of withdrawal; impossible to blow up Keroman U-boat pens at Lorient for lack of explosives; torpedo war-heads used to destroy Scorff shelters; Cannes still in German hands, Aug 18.
