Description

France: 66th Corps transferring to Besancon, commitments at Clermont-Ferrand taken over by General Ottenbacher; 47th Panzer Corps report ammunition depots MUENSTER/FERGUSON and MANDEL/EDGAR blown up causing increased strain on ammunition situation, 2nd and 116th Panzer Divisions arriving at assembly area without fuel, fuel urgently needed to ensure limited mobility; 54th Panzer Corps seeking fuel, Panzer Division Lehr without fuel for two days, 30 tanks immobilised; GAF situation report for Aug 13, withdrawals in Caen area as far as Mayenne area according to plan, additional covering line constructed between Domfront and Alencon; Allied thrust in direction Rouen expected; 10th SS Panzer Division to withdraw further to east during night Aug 13-14; battle reports from 74th Corps, 10th SS Panzer Division, 9th SS Panzer Division, 1st SS Corps and 276th Division; 1st Army under Army Group B with 48th and 338th Infantry Divisions; Military Commander France anticipating operation by Allied 8th Airborne Division, ordered increased alertness in north west France; Nordfels carrying coal, unable to leave Lorient for Brest because of lack of fuel; Gironde reported heavily mined, Captain U-boats West needed Bordeaux for berths; objections raised to concentration of about 20,000 vehicles in Nanacy, Aug 11.

Naval Headlines: U-boats U-445 and U-650 left La Pallice for Lorient laden with ammunition, Aug 12; movements of Allied forces interpreted by Japanese CinC South West Area Fleet as confirmation of imminent attack on Philippines; proposals for use of limpet mines by swimmers against Allied shipping in coral atolls; Japanese estimate of air strength at US naval and military bases in East Asia.
