Description

France: 9th Panzer Division report Allied break through near L'Ebennerie held, Aug 11; 81st Army Corps report Allies occupying Beaumont and attacking tanks in direction of Alencon, French Legion fighting on German side, Allied tank spearhead 6 km from Mamers moving on Le Mesle; battle reports from 1st SS Panzer Division, 326th Division, 2nd Parachute Corps, 47th Panzer Corps, 2nd Panzer Division; recommendation from 2nd Air Division to 3rd Air Fleet for transfer of aircraft torpedo units back from present bases to preempt transport and other difficulties to be expected following landings, Aug 11, 19th Army decreed 2nd Degree of Alarm on Aug 12; German Military Commander France order to Commander North East France to prepare to disarm French police on Aug 13.

Italy: sighting report of two large Allied convoys including aircraft carriers entering Ajaccio harbour, Aug 12; convoy identified as consisting of landing craft.

Naval Headlines: St Malo garrison suffered 60% losses, still fighting stubbornly; garrison to move from Benodet to Concarneau; Nantes harbour installations destroyed including minesweeper; U228 to leave St Nazaire for Bergen transporting equipment for testing GNAT torpedoes; Japanese submarine failed top make rendezvous with Germans; one third of Japanese 13th.

Independent Mixed Brigade on Wake Island reported to be suffering from malnutrition, colitis and beri-beri.

Orders from Berlin Air Ministry for further reduction in flying activity because of damage to fuel production, urgent necessity in all evacuations to be rescue of fuel, destruction only if at risk of capture, Aug 8.
