France: situation report for Aug 9, Allied spearhead about 40 km south-east of Le Mans; Battle Group Kievit, of 352nd Infantry Division, reports fighting with Allied infantry and tanks south of Bonnetable Aug 9; 10th SS Panzer Division report Allied tanks and motorised infantry attempting break-through to north; intentions of 84th Army Corps for Aug 10 include counter attacks with assault groups of 363rd and 353rd Infantry Divisions to retake old defence line; list of airfields in France and Low Countries from which stocks to be removed.
Italy: 15th Panzer Grenadier Division subordinated to 51st Mountain Corps, 356th Infantry Division withdrawing left wing to northern river bank, 278th Infantry Division to carry out fighting withdrawal to north bank of Cesano.
Naval Headlines: operations by S-boats from Le Havre using special weapon; 95 tons of urgently needed ammunition and 50 volunteers transferred from Jersey to St Malo, Aug 8; attempts to supply ports on south coast of Brittany with vital supplies; three U-boats on passage Lorient - La Pallice to operate against Allied destroyers and cruisers patrolling inshore waters between Ile de Yeu and Ile de Groix; military operation against guerrillas in Zara-Sibenik area completed, small number prisoners taken; CinC Japanese 1st Air Fleet escaped to Manila from Marianas, Japanese shortage of destroyers, sinkings attributed to U181 and U198 on passage from Europe.
