Description

West Europe: situation report of July 8, attack on Caen with undiminished violence; 9th SS Panzer Division unable to shift defence line because enemy artillery fire too heavy, 10th SS Panzer Division front line, July 8; 1st SS Corps urgently requests GAF fighter protection southwest of Caen, July 8; 17th SS Panzer Grenadier Division day report for July 7, unable to seal off enemy penetration, high casualties; Allied penetrations in Carentan sector, July 8; 3rd Parachute Division, southeast of St Lo, taking heavy daily casualties from artillery and aircraft, July 5; General Fieldmarshal Sperrle, AOC 3rd Air Fleet, prohibits all non-essential journeys, because of fuel shortage, caused by Allied air attacks, July 7; cancellation of 10th Air Corps plans for flare-dropping squadron, July 7; indications of disbandment of 10th Air Corps, bomber units transferred away, July 7; GAF to cease ferrying to Merignac, July 7; Hitler orders GAF photo-reconnaissance of Cherbourg, July 8.

South Europe: 14th Panzer Corps make slight withdrawal, main defence line in area of penetration, July 8; 2nd Air Fleet situation report, night July 7-8; GAF require reinforcements in Airasca area, north Italy, to deal with guerilla activity, July 7.
