Description

Western Europe: German battle group receives its orders to defend Cherbourg Peninsula, June 19, situation reports from battle group, June 19; 7th Army orders 1st SS Panzer Division Adolf Hitler, last located in May in Dunkirk/Ostend area, to be subordinated to 1st SS Panzer Corps, opposing 2nd British Army.

Southern Europe: withdrawal of 90th Panzer Grenadier Division south of Siena impeded by heavy Allied artillery fire and guerilla ambushes, June 19; GAF summary for June 18, arrival of 2 Allied aircraft carriers in Mediterranean suggests preparation for landing operations, Allied transfer of some 800 close support aircraft to Rome, Tarquinia and Terni areas.

Naval Headlines: includes 2 interesting U-boat items; St Peter Port, Guernsey, was only to be visited in emergency situations as it had become too dangerous; U-boats in the Channel were ordered to take any necessary risks to reach their operational area north of Seine Bay; Naval Headlines for June 18, PM asks First Sea Lord to comment on item from German Navy Office in Bordeaux proposing transfer of some 30,000 tons of shipping for raw materials to provision of supplies for 7th Army; First Sea Lord replies to PM with a minute of June 20 stating that appropriate UK military commanders had been informed of plan but as yet there were no signs of it being implemented, if it were, appropriate counter-measures would be put into force.

SIS Southern Department report number 199 of June 15 based on information from a neutral source in Turkey on current Turkish attitude, Turkey now expected to adopt a more pro-Allied attitude.
