PM from C.

Italy: battle reports for May 17, German withdrawals in Liri Sector, request for ground attack air support against strong tank concentrations, 51st Corps subjected to violent artillery fire, expect in preparation for attack from south; report from Naval Commandant Elba, for May 15, heavy air raids on area of Porto Ferraio, rail bridge over Arno at Pisa damaged; CinC South West anticipating Allied invasion on eastern coast of Italy and the consequent withdrawal of army units from Istria at short notice, requests Reichsfuehrer SS to provide reinforcements of SS and Police forces for protection of valuable economic objects and other measures to pacify the country, May 18; German intelligence report for May 15, French Expeditionary Force reached area 2 km south of Esperia in surprise thrust through almost impassable country past Fammera Massif.

Western Europe: report from 3rd Air Fleet for May 16 and 17, noting that recent light Allied air activity not explicable by unfavourable weather alone, conclude Allies holding back to conserve strength for some planned operation, anticipate preparations for large scale landing would involve further series of raids on important rail junctions.

Naval Headlines: 8th Destroyer Flotilla left Royan for exercises on May 17; Northern waters U-boats informed main task for summer 1944 to attack Russian supply traffic, except in event of Allied landings in Norway or in Skagerrak area; Japanese 1st Mobile Fleet sighted en route from Singapore to Tawitawi, May 14.
