Southern Europe: naval authority Messina informed on July 23 of Italian high command's intention to defend north-eastern region of Sicily to the last; supply stocks in Palermo considered by the Germans to have been destroyed, July 22; Allied raid by heavy bombers on Foggia railway station on July 22; Italian E-boats to operate against Allied units sighted making for Acireale, July 23; Axis steamer sunk, July 23; Allied raids on Crete, July 23.
