Mediterranean/Southern Europe: tension in Athens after Germans and Italians each shoot 10 Greek hostages in retaliation for attempt to sabotage Italian merchant vessel, June 19; German Navy requests Italian help in shipping tanks by landing craft from Salonika to Rhodes, June 21.

Portuguese ambassador, London: talks with Eden requesting Portuguese cooperation and use of military facilities in Azores, written in safeguards for Portugal including guaranteeing integrity of Portuguese colonies, ambassador considers Portugal has no option but to agree to British request; reply to ambassador from Lisbon on June 22 stating that initial reaction to UK request was unfavourable but discussion in the government was continuing, June 19.
