North Africa: GAF reports Panzer Army's line as Sormann-Azzizia-Road fork south of Castel Benito-eastern edge of Tripoli, Allied main body of forces near Tarhuna, Jan 22; Allied air raids on rear air fields in Gabes-Ben Gardane area, no effective fighterprotection, Elassa air field unserviceable because of sand drifts, Panzer Army planning swift withdrawal; Panzer Army in Tripoli defensive position, Italian forces covering south of Zuara, GAF battle HQ transferring to Zuara, list of aircraft available for operations, Jan 22; Flak Group Tunis, report Allied air raid on Tunis air field, no warning because of failure of FREYA equipment, Jan 22; Allied Southern Group, infiltrating mountains south-east of Castel Benito beaten off south of Azzizia, numerous air raids on Castel Benito; 5th Panzer Army report for Jan 19, Allied armoured force beaten off west of Heidous, Allied concentrations De Jefna station area, north of Medjez El Bab, south of Medjerda sector, north and west of Bou Arada, French Foreign troops stubbornly defending Dj Solbia, French desert troops thrusting east-north-east towards Oubari, French Camel troops preparing to attack Ghat; Orders for continuous reconnaissances to establish presence of Allied forces for possible attack on Gabes, Sfax or Sousse, Jan 22; Lack of fuel hampering withdrawal of non-mobile elements of Panzer Army behind Mareth position, move to Sfax not feasible; developed Mareth position to provide flank protection for Tunisian operations but Gabes position to be developed against all eventualities; Hitler's orders for the reformation of units in Tunisia, Jan 19.
