Indenture between Thomas Rudgwey esq. of Torre, Devon, of one part, and John Hole of the parish of Saint Thomas the Apostle without the west gate of Exeter, yeoman, and William Ley of Whitestone, Devon, husbandman, of the other part, reciting that whereas John Huckmore esq. of Buckland Baron, Devon, acknowledged, by a recognisance of statute staple dated 28 June 1580, before Sir Thomas Offeley, mayor of the staple of Westminster, and William Fleetwoode esq., recorder of the city of London, a debt to Philip Basset esq. of Columbjohn, Devon, of £2, 000, proceedings to recover the debt were commenced by writ of extent sued in the court of Chancery and directed to the sheriff of Devon, who seized from John Huckmore the manor of South Allington (Southallington), Devon, with appurtenances, of the clear yearly value of 11 shillings, the manor of "Comb Bucklande" and Netherton, Devon, with appurtenances, 20 messuages, 2 water mills, 1, 000 acres of land, 500 acres of pasture, 100 acres of meadow, with appurtenances, in Combeinteignhead (Comentyhed) and Coffinswell, Devon, of the clearly yearly value of 20 shillings, a moiety of the manor of Stoke, Devon, with appurtenances, a moiety of 20 messuages, 200 acres of pasture, 100 acres of land, 40 acres of meadow, with appurtenances in Stokeinteignhead (Stokentynhed), Devon, of the clear yearly value of 10 shillings, lands and tenements called Buckyett (Buckeyate), Devon, 6 messuages, 200 acres of land, 20 acres of meadow, 100 acres of pasture with appurtenances in Little Hempston (Little Hempson), Devon, of the clear yearly value of 10 shillings, lands and tenements called "Porcome", 6 messuages, 100 acres of land, 40 acres of pasture and 20 acres of meadow, with appurtenances in Broadhempston, Devon, and woodland, of the clear yearly value of 5 shillings, 10 messuages, 100 acres of land, 40 acres of meadow, 100 acres of pasture, with appurtenances, in Ashburton (Aisheberton'), Devon, of the clear yearly value of 10 shillings, 3 messuages, 100 acres of land, 40 acres of pasture, 10 acres of meadow, with appurtenances, in Stokenham, Devon, of the clear yearly value of 12 pence, and 2 messuages, 100 acres of land, 20 acres of meadow and 40 acres of pasture with appurtenances in Buckland near Ashburton, of the clear yearly value of 12 pence. The seized lands, tenements, goods and chattels, having been extended by the sheriff, were then delivered in settlement of the debt to Philip Bassett, to be held as his freehold, who, by a deed of 4 February 1581, bargained and sold the debt and the lands to Thomas Rudgwey, and now bargaining to grant the same to Hole and Ley for an advance.
