New South Wales was named by Captain Cook who landed at Botany Bay in 1770. In 1788 a settlement was founded. In 1901 New South Wales joined the new Commonwealth of Australia.
Originally New South Wales administered much of eastern Australia. Tasmania was separated in 1825, Victoria in 1851 and Queensland in 1859. New Zealand was also under New South Wales until 1841.
