Description

County: Wiltshire. Grant description and date(s): hearth tax granted by Parliament 1662 May 19.

Document description: mainly exemption certificates. 688 items comprising 640 certificates, 4 schedules of abatements and one modern (19th century) title card. The certificates include lists of those receiving alms of the parish (often separate documents); and some certificates are divided into those in receipt of alms and those exempted by the Act, highlighting the fact that in some other counties almspeople were probably not listed among the exempt on the certificates.

Described and dated at item level.

Includes names of individuals. Most of these Wiltshire certificates have long been in E 179/348. 22 certificates and a schedule of abatements were added from E 179/360; one certificate was added from E 179/325 Misc; and 87 exemption certificates for Westmorland were moved from this piece to E 179/353 Part 1 in August 2017, to bring together Westmorland hearth tax exemption certificates.

Separated material

33 early manuscript certificates (1662-1664) are bound in a guard book in E 179/259/26B; with original white leather bag.
