Description

Counties: North Riding of Yorkshire, Halikeld and Allerton wapentakes; East Riding of Yorkshire; and West Riding of Yorkshire Grant descriptions and dates: poll tax granted by Parliament c. 1377 Feb 16 x 19 and fifteenth and tenth granted by Parliament 1357 April 17 x May 5 Document description: Receipts, file of 33 mems. The file originally appears to have comprised receipts relating to the collection of the 1377 poll tax in the wapentakes of Halikeld and Allerton in the North Riding of Yorkshire. However, seven membranes appear to have been added from elsewhere. Six relate to this tax, one from Ryedale in the North Riding (probably a stray from E 179/211/30), one from Claro in the West Riding (probably from E 179/206/39), and four from the East Riding (three being strays from E 179/202/59 and E 179/202/62). Membrane 27 is a receipt for Upsall in Langbaurgh wapentake (North Riding), relating to aspects of the fifteenth and tenth of 1357.

Some of the documents are faded or stained, and are only legible under UV light. Further receipts for the 1377 poll tax for other regions of the North Riding survive in the pieces in E 179/211/29-34.
