Description

Old Somerset House. 4 engraved views. (i) Top right: 'Somerset House next the River 1568'. (ii) Top left: 'Somerset Palace 1650': view taken from the River Thames. Painted by 'C.B.' and engraved by Malcolm; published by J P Malcolm, Middlesex, Somers Town, 1 December 1st 1797. (iii) Centre: 'Old Somerset House': view taken from the River with the Savoy on the left. (iv) Bottom: 'Somerset House in its original state with the various buildings on the banks of the River Thames as far as Westminster from an Ancient Painting in Dulwich College'. A note below states: 'This view exhibits Somerset House previous to the alterations made by Inigo Jones, to fit it for the use of Queen Henrietta Maria, wife of Charles I. Adjoining it is the Savoy, and immediately behind it, the only view extant of Exeter House. Further on is Worcester House and stairs, and Suffolk House. The buildings in the distance are Whitehall and Westminster Abbey, opposite to which are Lambeth Church and Palace'. Published by William Herbert and Robert Wilkinson, 58 Cornhill, 11 October 1809.
