Description

This piece contains documents relating to a range of subjects. All the papers are in French unless otherwise indicated, and include:

  • Papers relating to the first Battle of Cape Finisterre, 3 May 1747 [Julian Calendar], including printed copies of signals to be used by the French ships, orders of combat and retreat, and an account of the battle.
  • Papers relating to a Sieur Chautard, including commissions as ship's Secretary and later Second Ensign on several French East India Company vessels, 1732-1745.
  • One volume, in English, of letters and orders (copies and originals) to and from Captain Gwynn of HMS Ambuscade, concerning the prize case of the French ship Chameau, and other matters, dated May 1747 to August 1748. Includes orders from Admiral George Anson and Admiral Peter Warren.
  • Lists of signals and passwords to be used by French East India Company Ships on the expeditions to India of 1752-1753 and 1753-1754, with specific signals for the ship Prince de Conti. Also includes a copy of the regulations relating to tobacco carried by the Conti's crew, 1754.
  • Navigation log of the french ship St Jeanne de Cherbourg, Captain George, 1747.
  • A navigation diary/log for the french ship Achille, covering the period 1745-1748.
  • A book of navigational instructions for ships sailing from France to India and China c1750. Papers relating to the proportions of gun-carriages, and a statement of canons and mortars on the coasts of Cornouaille and Leon [Brittany, France], 1738.
  • Draught of a commission for granting letters of marque against the French, 1689.
