Description

Captured ship: Le Grand Don de Dieu, Antoine Duvigneau master.

Details: French merchant ship with a letter of marque on a voyage from Saint-Domingue (Haiti) to Bordeaux, when captured on 9 September 1778 by the privateer Pitt.

Documents: c 260 personal and business letters (in French) from Cap Français, Saint-Domingue (Haiti) for onward delivery to addresses in France. Enclosed with the letters are: bills of lading for La Constance of Bordeaux, Lamarque master, and an invoice and bill of lading for Le Grand Don de Dieu dated 25 June 1778, giving the name of the master as Rogé Ducasse, Duvigneau's predecessor (no. 15). Also (not letters for onward delivery):

  • three letters of an earlier date, to people in Le Grand Don de Dieu and others at Cap Français;
  • letter (no. 52) written at Cap Français to the surgeon of the hospital there, describing a case of dysentery;
  • receipt signed by Rogé Ducasse for 821 livres received from Monsieur Gentom for his passage in Le Grand Don de Dieu, Captain Duvigneau, at Cap Français, 6 July 1778.

(There is also a note in English in a sixteenth- or seventeenth-century hand from John Phipps, clerk, about some legal matter, evidently a stray introduced from an unrelated source, presumably at Doctors' Commons or a lawyer's office.)
