Description

Captured ship: La Renommée (commander François de Saint-Alouarn)

Details: a French warship (30-gun frigate) on voyage from France to Saint-Domingue; taken in fight on 13/24 September 1747 in latitude 46° 30' by HMS Dover (Washington Shirley commanding), and brought into Plymouth.

Documents (all in French): (continued from HCA 30/245 and in HCA 30/246)

SA 1-SA 121: private archive of Captain Saint Avoye, including

  • SA 1-SA 62: letters and memoranda;
  • SA 63- SA 91: songs and poems (90 and 91 with simple manuscript music and lyrics for two short songs, one about a lovesick shepherd);
  • SA 92-SA 119: letters and memoranda; including SA 97-SA 99, three playing cards: a two and a ten of hearts, a queen of clubs; all Paris pattern, one with rough calculations and the other used as a label.
  • SA 120-SA 121: commissions from Louis XV appointing St Avoye as captain of the regiment of infantry of Maine, dated at Versailles, 30 May 1731; and as captain of le Compagnie des Soldats Invalides, dated at Strasbourg, 8 October 1744.
