Description

Captured ship: La Renommée (commander François de Saint-Alouarn).

Details: a French warship (30-gun frigate) on voyage from France to Saint-Domingue; taken in fight on 13/24 September 1747 in latitude 46° 30' by HMS Dover (Washington Shirley commanding), and brought into Plymouth.

Documents (all in French):

  • 323-695: mail in transit, including official French government correspondence (letters to the Governor of Saint-Domingue, garrison commanders and other officials), and personal and business letters and letter packets, from various parts of France to Saint Domingue for onward delivery; now sorted by name of the writer
  • 696-737: Gazette d'Amsterdam, issues 98-104 (1746); 1-58 (1747), and Gazette d'Utrecht, issues 97-104 (1746); 1-63 (1747) being sent to [Charles de Tubieres] Marquis de Caylus, Governor-General of the [French] Leeward Isles, at Martinique.

Includes:

  • account of the First Battle of Cape Finisterre, which took place on 3 May 1747, listing numbers of men and guns carried by all the warships involved, casualties and other details (enclosed with a letter dated 27 August 1747);
  • commission from Louis XV appointing Capt St Avoye to the place vacated by the death of Capt de Gras as captain of le Compagnie des Soldats Invalides, dated at Strasbourg, 8 October 1744;
  • petition to the Comte de Maurepas from Jean Marie Bernard Faubeau;
  • copy of Suite de la Clef, ou Journal Historique sur les Matieres du tems for January 1747;
  • simple manuscript music and lyrics for two short songs, one about a lovesick shepherd;
  • several petitions to the Marquis de Conflans, Governor-General of Saint-Domingue, including one for employment from a professor of mathematics and correspondent of L'Academie des Sciences;
  • printed list of merchant ships arriving at Bordeaux, Nantes and La Rochelle in June 1747, and a table of the total quantities of itemised goods handled by those ports in that month.
