Barbados was annexed by Britain in 1625 and settled by 1627, in which year the office of governor and a legislative council were established. A house of assembly was constituted in 1639. Barbados was a member of the Federation of the West Indies which was set up in 1958 but dissolved in 1962. It became an independent state within the Commonwealth on 30 November 1966.
