Description

Secret packs of the Commander in Chief Grand Fleet, Volume XXXIX, pack 0021, sections I-XIV.

Losses of ships.

Folio 1: Title page.

Folio 2: Explanatory note. During the period of the War, papers of a confidential nature in the office of the C-in-C Home Fleet were filed in Packs (numbered separately from the non-confidential records) in a Series 001 to 0042 inclusive. Copies of relevant telegrams were filed in these packs, but a complete set of all telegrams was also maintained. The secret packs were re-arranged by the Grand Fleet secretarial staff in February 1919, when papers considered unimportant were removed and destroyed, and the remainder re-indexed. They were received in this form by the Historical Section in April 1920, and bound as received, in a series of Volumes. The 1919 index will be found in the first volume (see ADM 137/1881) and extracts from this have been inserted in each succeeding volume. This volume is the 39th of the series.

Folio 3: Index of contents. Losses of HM Ships including telegrams, despatches, letters, signals, salvage reports and evidence of enquiries.

Folios 4-7: Blank.

Folio 8: Contents. [Note: This list of contents also has the following ships listed but which have been deleted from the contents list at folio 3 and for which no information is contained in this volume: HMS Aboukir, HMS Cressy and HMS Hogue, HMS Lynx, HMS Argyll, HMS Natal, HMS King Edward VII].

Folios 9-24: HMS Hawke. Includes lists of survivors (folio 12).

Folios 25-176: HMS Audacious sunk on 27 October 1914. Also includes a report concerning the death of William Burgess, Petty Officer First Class, Official Number 209113, serving on HMS Liverpool on 27 October 1914.

Folios 177-184: HMS Viknor.

Folios 185-202: HMS Clan McNaughton.
