Secret packs of the Commander in Chief Grand Fleet

Volume V: Pack 005: Sections E,F and G: Minefields

This volume includes: correspondence, operational orders, memoranda, reports of operations and proceedings, names of correspondents, names of ships, charts of minefields. (Some charts kept in separate Volumes).

Folio 1: Title page.

Folio 2: Explanatory note. During the period of the War, papers of a confidential nature in the office of the C-in-C Home Fleet were filed in Packs (numbered separately from the non-confidential records) in a Series 001 to 0042 inclusive. Copies of relevant telegrams were filed in these packs, but a complete set of all telegrams was also maintained. The secret packs were re-arranged by the Grand Fleet Secretarial staff in February 1919, when papers considered unimportant were removed and destroyed, and the remainder re-indexed. They were received in this form by the Historical Section in April 1920, and bound as received, in a series of Volumes. The 1919 index will be found in the first volume (see ADM 137/1881) and extracts from this have been inserted in each succeeding volume. This volume is the 5th of the series

Folios 562-723: Treatise on minelaying by L Clinton-Baker Rear Admiral (M) 30 January 1919. Places on record certain knowledge gained during the War 1914-1918. Issued in response to Admiralty letter 31 December 1918 (paper M 026348/18)requesting that a Mining Manual be prepared containing such technical and operational information of value as has been obtained by practical experience during the War 1914-1918. Includes input by: Captain SF Litchfield-Speer, Captain HH Smyth, Captain Lockhart Leith, Lieutenant NDB Taylor, Commander RHO Lane-Poole
