Description

Medical and surgical journal of HMS Supply for 1875 by John Neeson Stone, Staff Surgeon, Royal Navy, during which time the said ship was employed in the Congo Expedition. This journal also contains its own integral subject index (folios 37-38).

Folio 1: Contents page.

Folios 2-3: Causes giving rise to the Congo Expedition.

Folios 3-4: Geography of the Congo.

Folios 4-5: Topography of the Congo.

Folio 5: Government of the Congo.

Folios 5-9: Social conditions of the Congo including comments on fetishes, pipes, music, arts, trade, mode of fighting, and arms.

Folios 9-10: Natural history of the Congo including Ornithology, Jethyology, Botany, Geology, and Climatology.

Folio 11: Plan of the Congo Expedition.

Folios 11-19: Sanitary and medical measures including selection of the season (folio 12), sleeping on board (folio 12), cleaning decks (folio 12), giving days off (folio 13), extra issues (folio 13), compulsory cooking of food (folio 13), extra spirit ration (folios 13-16), issue of quinine (folios 16-17); water (folio 17), lime juice (17), cholera belts (folio 17), drying clothes (folio 17), helmets (folios 17-18), copy of the daily routine for ships in the river (folios 18-19), numbers of medical staff and their duties (folio 19).

Folios 19-25: Diary of proceedings from 28 August 1875, the date of arrival of HMS Supply at Shark's Point with stores for the expedition up to the departure of the Squadron. Includes comments on the current (folios 20-21), floating islands (folios 21-22), armour plates (folio 22), health of men (folio 22-23), courage of bushmen (folio 23), amusing parley (folio 24).

Folios 27-33: Description and history of St Paul de Loando including comments about its climatology (folios 28-29), sanitation (folios 29-30), fevers (folios 30-31), slavery (folios 31-32), palm oil chop (folios 32-33).
