Medical and surgical journal of HMS Salamander for 1 January to 31 December 1867 by Alexander Rattray, MD, Surgeon, during which time the said ship was employed on particular service (Australia).

Folio 2: James Payne or Pain, aged 28, captain's coxswain; case number 1; drowned 19 September 1867.
Folios 2-3: William Byrne, aged 40, captain of the foretop; case number 2; disease or hurt, cephalagia. Put on sick list, 26 August 1867 while near Batavia. Sent to hospital.
Folios 3-4: J A Dashwood, aged 25, 2nd Lieutenant; case number 3; disease or hurt, primary syphilis and gonorrhoea. Put on sick list, 9 October 1867. Discharged 15 October 1867 to Simon's Bay Hospital.
Folios 4-5: George Winter, aged 27, private marine; case number 4; disease or hurt, febris continued and typhus. Put on sick list, 1 November 1867. Died 6 November 1867.
Folio 5: William Robertson, aged 37, able seaman; case number 5; disease or hurt, febris continued and typhus. Put on sick list, 19 October 1867. Discharged 11 November 1867 to Ascension hospital.
Folios 5-6: Daniel Hambleton, aged 28, private; case number 6; disease or hurt, periostitis. Put on sick list, 9 September 1867. Discharged 17 December 1867 to Haslar hospital.

HMS Salamander is grounded on Steven's Island on 3 March (folio 15); water colour drawing of the bay of Batavia (folio 16); by kind permission of the Surgeon of the Dutch flag Ship Amsterdam the Surgeon saw several cases of Beri- beri, describing its effects and symptoms (folio 16); comments about whether the cases of typhus on board HMS Salamander were the same as the Cape or Mauritius fevers and whether the disease originated on board or from the shore (folios 17-19); small colour drawing of HMS Salamander's store room and part of the lower deck (folio 19); Copy of the Medical Committee on the cases of fever in Cape Town and Suburbs. Signed by H A Ebden, MD, A D Shea, Deputy Inspector of Hospitals, W H Ross, MD (folios 23-24); track chart of HMS Salamander's route from England to Australia in 1864 (folio 23A); comments regarding the natural history and marine zoology of the Cape of Good Hope (folios 25-26); colour diagram to illustrate the geography, geology, hydrography and topography of the Cape of Good Hope and its vicinity (folio 26); celebrated vineyards of Constantine and Wynberg (folio 26).
