Description

Journal of the HM luggar Violet for 13 August 1809 to 13 August 1810 by Hamilton P Burke, Assistant Surgeon, during which time the said luggar was employed in the Guernsey station.

Folios 1-2: Mr Thompson, aged 27, master; taken ill at Guernsey; disease or hurt, lues veneria and gonorrhoea; taken ill, 13 August 1809; discharged 28 August 1809 to duty.

Folio 2: John Foot, aged 23, able seaman; taken ill at Guernsey; disease or hurt, gonorrhoea; taken ill, 13 August 1809; discharged 23 August 1809 to duty.

Folios 3-4: Thomas Leecock, aged 29, carpenter mate; taken ill at Guernsey; disease or hurt, lues veneria; taken ill, 13 August 1809; discharged 4 September 1809 to duty.

Folios 3-4: Michael Canning, aged 26, marine; taken ill at Guernsey; disease or hurt, lues veneria, pain in the legs and arms extending down along the tibia and the superior part of the ulna; taken ill, 13 August 1809; discharged 17 September 1809 to duty.

Folio 4: Thomas Jackson, aged 27, corporal marine; taken ill at sea; disease or hurt, hernia humeralis on testicle, pain in the loins and along the spermatic cord; taken ill, 15 August 1809; discharged 23 September 1809 to duty.

Folio 5: Benjamin Foul, aged 20, able seaman; taken ill at sea; disease or hurt, scalded foot by a kettle of boiling water; taken ill, 21 August 1809; discharged 12 September 1809 to duty.

Folios 6-7: John Billington, aged 30, gunner mate; taken ill at sea; disease or hurt, whitloe [whitlow], great pain at the root of the fore finger of the right hand; taken ill, 13 November 1809; discharged 21 November 1809 to duty.

Folio 7: Barny Shay, aged 24, marine; taken ill at Guernsey; disease or hurt, cynanche tonsillaris, pain and difficulty in deglutition attended with slight cough; taken ill, 25 December 1809; discharged 6 January 1810 to duty.

Folio 7: Joseph Clay, aged 24, marine; taken ill at Mounts Bay; disease or hurt, pneumonia, pain in the thigh, headache, nausea and vomiting; taken ill, 17 January 1810; discharged 30 January 1810 to duty.

Folio 8: David Koch, aged 32, able seaman; taken ill at sea; disease or hurt, diarrhoea, frequent purging attended with gripping; taken ill, 17 February 1810; discharged 25 February 1810 to duty.

Folio 8: Thomas Focus, aged 20, able seaman; taken ill at Spithead; disease or hurt, ulcer in the leg while in the West Indies; taken ill, 1 February 1810; discharged 29 April 1810 to hospital at Plymouth.

Folio 8: Thomas Jackson, aged 27, corporal marine; taken ill at sea; disease or hurt, pneumonia, pain in the region of the thorax attended with a troublesome cough without expectoration; taken ill, 18 February 1810; discharged 1 March 1810 to duty.

Folio 9: John Collins, aged 30, seaman; taken ill off the French coast; disease or hurt, contusion of the humerous received by a bolt of the guns giving way in the action with a French; taken ill, 27 March 1810; discharged 31 March 1810 to duty.

Folios 9-10: John Billington, aged 30, gunner mate; taken ill at Guernsey; disease or hurt, pneumonia, cough attended with slight headache, nausea and great uneasiness; taken ill, 28 March 1810; discharged 12 April 1810 to duty.

Folio 9: Robert McKarty, aged 32, quarter master; taken ill off the French coast; disease or hurt, gun shot wound through the leg, received a smart ticket; taken ill, 27 March 1810; discharged 29 March 1810 to military hospital at Castle Cornet.

Folio 10: Mr Fletcher, aged 15, midshipman; taken ill at sea; disease or hurt, injury of the testicle by a fall down the hatch way, scrotum swelled and inflamed; taken ill, 15 April 1810; discharged 21 April 1810 to duty.

Folio 10: John Bides, aged 29, seaman; taken ill at sea; disease or hurt, received this man from the Albacore on the 1 April with indolent ulcer on the leg, asked Lieutenant Sedly to exempt this man from duty, who refused; taken ill, 20 May 1810.

Folio 11: John Collins, aged 30, seaman; taken ill at sea; disease or hurt, gun shot wound of the arm received while employed cutting out a sloop from under the batteries of Abrwrick near Isle of Bass. taken ill, 9 May 1810, discharged on board the Vulture to be sent to hospital at Haslar.

Folio 11: On 10 June 1809 being ordered a prisoner, under the care of a centinel, and being treated in the most ungentlemanly manner by my commander, I refused duty any longer. And the sick were sent on board the Vulture to be attended.

Folio 11: John Montgomory, aged 23, seaman; taken ill at sea; disease or hurt, lues veneria, large swelling in the left groin; taken ill, 21 May 1810; discharged 9 April 1810.

Folio 12: Mr De Grouchy, aged 34, pilot; taken ill at sea; disease or hurt, in attempting to throw De Grouchy overboard into a sail, put down into the water for the purpose of bathing, the men threw him against a stenchin [stanchion] which injured him in the breast very much. He complains of cough and pain in the breast. Sent ashore where his wife and family live; taken ill, 2 July 1810. Discharged sick at Jersey.

Folio 12: Robert McKarty, aged 32, quartermaster; taken ill at Guernsey; disease or hurt, has been suffering with schrofula [scrofula] since the age of nine; taken ill, 8 July 1810, discharged 22 July 1810 to the hospital at Haslar.

Folio 12: Joseph Clay, aged 24, marine; taken ill at sea; disease or hurt, pneumonia, pains in the limbs, headache, nausea and vomiting, cough and pain under sternum; taken ill, 12 July 1810, discharged 15 July 1810 to duty.

Folio 13: numerical abstract of cases mentioned in the journal.

Folios 13-14: Surgeon's general remarks. Comments about the prevalence of pneumonia which was attributed to men sleeping on the 'base platform' in wet clothes even in December. Also contains remarks about the ill treatment of the men and the surgeon by Lieutenant Sedly. Dated 25 July 1809 Signed Hamilton Poumie Burke
