Surgeon's journal for HMS L'Aimable by Alexander Milne for the period 5 September 1797 to 4 September 1798 during which HMS L'Aimable was deployed in the West Indies and returned to England.
Folios 4-9: John Stephenson, aged 28; disease or hurt, universal debility, pain in head and back, a looseness attended by a tenesmus, gripings, borborygmi, pulse quick, chilliness succeeded by heat, frequent procidentiaani; dates on sick list, 9 January-3 July 1798; discharged to duty.
Folio 10: Thomas Edwards, aged 39; disease or hurt, severe tenesmus, gripings and fever, stools are sanious containing blood, skin is moist; dates on sick list, 2-7 September 1798; died.
Folio 11: Peter Blacklair, aged 49; disease or hurt, severe pain in stomach, purging with tenemus and some fever; dates on sick list, 28 August-3 September 1798; died.
Folio 12: An account (numerical) of both physical and surgical cases that occurred on board HMS L'Aimable between 5 September 1797 and 4 September 1795.
Folios 12-29: General remarks by Alexander Milne, surgeon, about the causes of dysentery (such as contaminated water) in the West Indies and on board HMS L'Aimable, and detailed descriptions of cases of dysentery together with details of their treatment.
Folios 30-31: An account of the receipt and expense of Peruvian Bark and essence of spruce supplied by Mr John Cole, surgeon of HMS Prince of Wales in 1797.
