Description

Medical and surgical journal of HMS Hercules for 1 April to 31 December 1853 by Edward Nolloth, Surgeon, during which time the said ship was employed on particular service conveying Scotch emigrants from Ireland (Cork) to Australia.

Folios 1-5A: Copy of the Daily Sick Book.

Folios 5A-8: William Church, aged 25, captain of the foretop; case number 1; disease or hurt, phthisis pulmonalis. Put on sick list, 2 June 1853 at sea. Discharged 20 June 1853 to Royal Naval Hospital, Simon's Bay, Cape of Good Hope.

Folios 8-10: John Newman, aged 45, quartermaster; case number 2; disease or hurt, fracture and dislocation of right clavicle. Put on sick list, 12 May 1853 at sea. Discharged 20 June 1853 to Royal Naval Hospital, Simon's Bay, Cape of Good Hope.

Folios 10-11: C J Pulfer, aged 36, Second Master; case number 3; disease or hurt, phlegmon. Put on sick list, 3 May 1853 at sea. Discharged 21 June 1853 to duty.

Folios 11-14: John McMillan, aged 22, able seaman; case number 4; disease or hurt, continued fever. Put on sick list, 14 July 1853 at sea. Died 15 October 1853 at sea.

Folios 14-15: John Wells, aged 25, able seaman; case number 5; disease or hurt, hepatitis. Put on sick list, 13 August 1853 on passage from Sydney to Hong Kong. Discharged 22 September 1853 cured.

Folio 15: A nosological synopsis of the sick book.

Folio 16: List of men who have received wounds or hurts, during the period of the journal. Makes reference to John Newman, (case number 2 see above).

Folios 16-17: Table 3, showing the total number of cases between 1 April to 31 December 1853 nosologically arranged. Mean numerical strength of the ship's company for the period 158.

Folios 18-20: Surgeon's general remarks.
