Description

Medical journal of the Bussorah Merchant emigrant ship from 16 March to 6 September 1839 by James Scott, surgeon and superintendent, during which time the said ship was employed in carrying male and female emigrants to Sydney, New South Wales.

Folio 1: Edward Lamb, aged 20, seaman; case number 1: disease or hurt, syphilis. Put on sick list, 9 April 1839 at King Road, Bristol. Discharged 2 May 1839 to duty.

Folios 1-2: Richard Anderson, aged 27, seaman; case number 2: disease or hurt, haemorrhoids. Put on sick list, 9 April 1839 at King Road, Bristol. Discharged 30 April 1839 to duty.

Folio 2: James Moore, aged 19, ordinary seaman; case number 3: disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 9 April 1839 at King Road, Bristol. Discharged 28 April 1839 to duty.

Folio 2: William Adlard, aged 18, seaman; case number 4: disease or hurt, epilepsia. Put on sick list, 12 April 1839 at King Road, Bristol. Discharged 29 April 1839 to duty.

Folio 2: Eleanor Stephens, aged 17, emigrant (had previously worked in cloth manufactory); case number 5: disease or hurt, epilepsia. Put on sick list, 12 April 1839 at King Road, Bristol. Discharged 16 May 1839 cured.

Folios 2-3: John Pegler Clarke, aged 11, emigrant; case number 6: disease or hurt, fractura cruris. Put on sick list, 9 May 1839 at sea. Discharged 20 June 1839 cured.

Folio 3: Eliza Morris, aged 19, emigrant; case number 7: disease or hurt, obstipatio. Put on sick list, 12 April 1839 at King Road. Discharged 27 May 1839 cured.

Folio 4: Samuel Clarke, aged 14, emigrant; case number 8: disease or hurt, obstipatio. Put on sick list, 12 April 1839 at King Road, Bristol. Discharged 27 May 1839 cured.

Folio 4: Henry Chappell, aged 25, emigrant; case number 9: disease or hurt, pneumonia. Put on sick list, 13 April 1839 at King Road, Bristol. Discharged 14 May 1839 cured.

Folio 5: Joanna Pearce, aged 7, emigrant; case number 10: disease or hurt, enteritis. Put on sick list, 27 April 1839 at sea. Died 1 May 1839 at 5pm.

Folios 5-6: Hannah Walkley, aged 12, emigrant; case number 11: disease or hurt, colica. Put on sick list, 2 May 1839 at sea. Discharged 14 May 1839 cured.

Folio 6: Sarah Thompson, aged 14, emigrant; case number 12: disease or hurt, colica. Put on sick list, 2 May 1839 at sea. Discharged 15 May 1839 cured.

Folio 6: William Stephens, aged 21, emigrant; case number 13: disease or hurt, scorbutus. Put on sick list, 16 May 1839 at sea. Discharged 2 June 1839 cured.

Folio 7: Anne Dyer, aged 6 months, emigrant; case number 14: disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 16 May 1839 at sea. Died 23 May 1839.

Folios 7-8: James Thomas Cotton, aged 13, apprentice to the ship owner; case number 15: disease or hurt, fractura et luxatio femoris. Put on sick list, 19 May 1839 at sea. Discharged 28 July 1839 cured.

Folios 8-9: Anne Watkins, aged 12, emigrant; case number 16: disease or hurt, concussion cerebri/apoplexia traumatica. Put on sick list, 4 July 1839 at sea. Discharged 26 July 1839 cured.

Folios 9-10: Sarah Tainton, aged 22, emigrant; case number 17: disease or hurt, typhus. Put on sick list, 21 July 1839 at sea. Discharged 14 August 1839 cured.

Folio 10: Maria Organ, aged 25, emigrant; case number 18: disease or hurt, typhus. Put on sick list, 31 July 1839 at sea. Discharged 13 August 1839 cured.

Folio 10: James Watkins, aged 5 months, case number 19; William Beard, aged 18 months, case number 20; Joseph Evans, aged 8, case number 21; Henry Harris, aged 2, case number 22; and the male infant of John and Eliza Shipway born at sea on board the Bussorah Merchant on Saturday 25 May 1839 were all vaccinated on Tuesday 13 August 1839. All the five children were twice vaccinated ineffectually.

Folios 10-11: Jacob Skirton, aged 10, emigrant; case number 24: disease or hurt, fractura brachii sinistri. Put on sick list, 31 August 1839 at sea. Landed at Sydney with the other emigrants 6 September 1839.

Folio 11: a nosological synopsis of the sick book kept during the period of the journal.
