Description

Medical and surgical journal of HM male convict ship Palambam from 8 January to 13 August 1831 by James Osborne, surgeon.

Folios 1-2: Mary Smith, aged 25, convict; case number 1; disease or hurt, syniope. Put on sick list, 4 April 1831, at sea. Discharged 28 April 1831 cured.

Folios 2-3: Mrs O'Brian's child, aged 19 months; case number 2; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 4 April 1831, at sea. Discharged 15 April 1831 quite well.

Folios 3-8: Betsey Riley, aged 25, convict; case number 3; disease or hurt, atrophy. Put on sick list, 4 April 1831, at sea. Died 10 May 1831.

Folios 8-9: Mrs Ferguson's child, aged 11 months; case number 4; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 24 April 1831, at sea. Died 27 April 1831.

Folio 9: Johanna [Ahern?], aged 26, convict; case number 5; disease or hurt, obstipatio. Put on sick list, 26 April 1831, at sea. Discharged 5 May 1831 cured.

Folios 10-11: Mrs Wood's infant; case number 6; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 3 May 1831, at sea. Discharged 16 May 1831 cured.

Folios 11-14: Mary Lyden, aged 24, convict; case number 7; disease or hurt, pneumonia. Put on sick list, 12 May 1831, at sea. Discharged 3 June 1831 cured.

Folio 14: Mary Rooney, aged 28, convict; case number 8; disease or hurt, accident, fell from the main deck down the hatch and hurt her left side and shoulder. Put on sick list, 10 June 1831, at sea. Discharged 16 June 1831.

Folio 15: Julia Murphy, aged 22, convict; case number 9; disease or hurt, dysentery. Put on sick list, 10 June 1831, at sea. Discharged 16 June 1831 quite well.

Folios 15-18: Mary Lyden, aged 24, convict; case number 10; disease or hurt, pneumonia. Put on sick list, 18 June 1831, at sea. Died 23 July 1831.

Folios 18-20: Mary Connor, aged 28, convict; case number 11; disease or hurt, obstipatio. Put on sick list, 13 July 1831, at sea. Discharged 25 July 1831 quite well.

Folio 21: a numerical abstract of the medical cases mentioned in the journal.

Folio 22: Surgeon's general remarks. The female convicts free children from the Foundling hospital at Cork and free women wives of convicts in New South Wales in number 191 were all healthy in the extreme during the voyage. The medium heat by thermometer during the six months they were on board as follows: March, 50; April, 74; May, 72; June, 54; July 50; August to the 13th, 60.
