Medical journal of the convict ship Mary from 3 March to 21 September 1835 by John Inches, surgeon and superintendent, during which time the said ship was employed on a voyage to New South Wales.
Folios 1-3: case no 1, Georgiana Clarke, aged 25, convict; sick or hurt, [Icterus?]; put on sick list 14 May 1835, discharged 23 May 1835.
Folios 3-12, 17-21: case no 2, M A Allum, aged 21, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, peritonitis; put on sick list 1 June 1835, convalescent 20 August 1835.
Folios 10-11: case no 3, Mary Williams, aged 36, convict; sick or hurt, diarrhoea; put on sick list 3 July 1835, recovered 8 July 1835.
Folios 11-13: case no 4, Sarah Hopewood, aged 24, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, diarrhoea; put on sick list 3 July 1835, recovered 17 July 1835.
Folios 12-13: case no 5, Luisa Dickson, aged 21, convict; sick or hurt, diarrhoea; put on sick list 14 July 1835, recovered 17 July 1835.
Folios 13-22: case no 6, M A Tyrrel, aged 37, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, fracture; put on sick list 17 July 1835, sent 7 September 1835 to hospital at Sydney.
Folios 14-16: Ann Stott, aged 23, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, labour pains and was confined at 10 am of a male child; put on sick list 18 July 1835, recovered 24 July 1835.
Folios 16-19: case no 7, Catherine Figgans, aged 38, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, scorbutus; put on sick list 1 August 1835, died 10 August 1835 at 4 am.
Folios 20-21: Bridget Shee, aged 19, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, labour pains and was confined at 7 pm of a male child; put on sick list 14 August 1835, recovered 19 August 1835.
Folio 23: numerical abstract of cases mentioned in the journal, nosologically arranged.
Folios 24-25: Surgeon's general remarks regarding the women who died [Catherine Figgans, case no 7, folios 16-19] came on board in an debilitated state with a child at the breast aged nine months old. The first officer Mr Simson although a young man did his duty well and I had no trouble keeping the women and sailors apart. Signed: John Inches.
