Description

Medical and surgical journal of the male convict ship Mary between 8 December 1829 and ? [no date recorded] by Robert Espie, Surgeon and Superintendent. during which time the said ship was employed on a passage from England to Van Diemen's Land.

Folio 1: Blank.

Folio 2: Jonathan Butt, aged 30, Convict; disease or hurt, debility, superinduced by seasickness. Put on sick list, 20 December, at sea. Discharged 26 January 1830.

Folio 3: William Butterworth, aged 28, Convict; disease or hurt, phlegmonous inflammata, produced by a burn. Put on sick list, 10 January, at sea. Discharged 28 January.

Folios 3-4: Thomas Mayer, aged 27, Convict; disease or hurt, phlogosis affecting the chest and left hypochondrial region. Put on sick list, 3 February, at sea. Discharged 4 March.

Folios 4-6: James Nowland, aged 40, Convict; disease or hurt, debility, arising from a slight attack of cholera. Put on sick list, 15 February, at sea. Died 23 February. The Surgeon remarks that 'this is a case I have never seen a parallel to in any country'.

Folios 6-9: Robert Wright, aged 21, Private of the 21st Regiment; disease or hurt, continued fever. Put on sick list, 10 February, at sea. Discharged to duty, 20 March.

Folios 10-12. Blank. The abstract of medical cases form is not completed and there are no general remarks
