Medical journal of the Manlius, convict ship from 6 June to 17 November 1828 by P M Ternan, surgeon and superintendent, during which time the ship was employed in a voyage to Van Diemen's Land.
Folios 1-2: Michael Manion, aged 20, private 63rd regt, taken ill at Little Nore; sick or hurt, venereal, simple chancres and gonorrhoea, discharge from under prepuce; put on sick list 14 July 1828, discharged 4 August 1828 to duty.
Folios 2-3: John Mee, aged 16, prisoner, taken ill at the Nore; sick or hurt, dysenteria, headach, nausea, pain and griping of the bowels, frequent stools; put on sick list 16 July 1828, discharged 29 July 1828 cured.
Folios 3-5, 28: John Mahoney, aged 14, prisoner, taken ill at the Nore; sick or hurt, [hoenoptiris?], was called to see a boy who it was said was dying, I found that he had been removed into the hospital before my arrival, and was throwing uo blood from the lungs in a large quantities at every expectoration; put on sick list 19 July 1828, died 14 September 1828 [see also surgeon's general remark, folio 28].
Folios 5-6: David Auundore, aged 22, prisoner, taken ill at the Nore; sick or hurt, dysenteria, slight griping and purging, slight pyrexia with tenesmus and mucous; put on sick list 19 July 1828, discharged 11 August 1828 well.
Folio 6: James Ashton, aged 41, prisoner, taken ill off Devon; sick or hurt, fractured ribs, fell down the fore hatchway and broke the two inferior true ribs of right side; put on sick list 23 July 1828, discharged 3 August 1828 cured.
Folios 6-7, 15: Owen Philben, aged 25, soldier, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, fever, several cold chills with pain in the forehead; put on sick list 3 August 1828, discharged 29 August 1828 to duty, had been put on the list again for pneumonia on 2 November, discharged 16 November 1828 well.
Folios 8, 16: Samuel Walton, aged 22, prisoner, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, peritonitis, pain in the abdomen; put on sick list 22 August 1828, discharged 29 August 1828 cured, had been put on the list again for dysenteria on 3 November, sent 11 November 1828 to hospital at Hobart Town.
Folios 8-9, 28: John Gregson, aged 23, prisoner, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, erysipelas, inflammation occupying the back part of the right leg no disorder of the system but great mental depression; put on sick list 31 August 1828, discharged 27 October 1828 cured, [see also surgeon's general remark, folio 28].
Folios 10-11: Hyram Jacobs, aged 18, prisoner, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, chronic bronchitis, complained of cephalgia for some days as well as pectoral disturbance; put on sick list 4 September 1828, discharged 9 November 1828 well.
Folios 11-12: James Steel, aged 18, prisoner, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, febricular, several cold chills followed by heat, thirst, headache and vomiting; put on sick list 19 September 1828, discharged 20 October 1828 well.
Folio 12: Mrs. Hughs, aged 28, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, erysipelas, fell in the cabin a few days ago by which her ear and left temple were slightly contused; put on sick list 27 September 1828, discharged 5 October 1828 well.
Folio 13: James Barlow, aged 20, prisoner, taken ill at Cape of Good Hope; sick or hurt, fever, nausea and vomiting, headache, thirst and tenderness of the epigastrium; put on sick list 10 October 1828, sent 11 November 1828 to hospital at Hobart Town.
Folio 14: William Thomson, aged 34, prisoner, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, fever, slight fever with constipation; put on sick list 11 October 1828, discharged 9 November 1828 well.
Folios 14-15: Andrew Pearson, aged 31, prisoner, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, fractured, fall over the booms on the fore castle by which both bones of the left leg were broken and slight external wound; put on sick list 16 October 1828, sent 11 November 1828 to hospital at Hobart Town.
Folios 16-17: John Cain, aged 16, prisoner, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, fever, headache, thirst and general lassitude; put on sick list 5 November 1828, discharged 10 November 1828 convalescent.
