Description

Medical and surgical journal of the convict ship Layton for 11 May to 17 November 1829 by James Osborne, Surgeon,during which time the said ship has been employed on a passage to New South Wales with 200 male convicts.

Folio 1: Samuel Horton, aged 18, Convict; disease or hurt, ulcer. Put on sick list, 10 June 1829. Discharged into the Retribution convict hulk at Sheerness, by order of J [?] Capper, Surgeon, 18 June 1829.

Folio 2: Martin Millett, aged 19, Convict; disease or hurt, diarrhoea, frequent purging and pain in his bowels with little or no fever, has been so for three days. Put on sick list, 10 June 1829, Sheerness. Discharged 12 June 1829.

Folios 2-3: Hugh Feeney, aged 23, Convict; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 11 June 1829, Sheerness. Discharged 17 June 1829.

Folio 3: Charles Shearman, aged 26, Guard; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 16 June 1829, Sheerness. Discharged 13 June 1829.

Folios 3-4: Joseph Nibbs, aged 24, Guard; disease or hurt, pneumonia, pains in his loins and extremities, skin hot, nausea. Put on sick list, 18 June 1829, Sheerness. Discharged to duty, 26 June 1829.

Folio 4: Caleb Wheeler, aged 26, Convict; disease or hurt, had the [opii nasi] fractured but not displaced and the integuments over the nose divided an inch and a half by a blow from a block. Put on sick list, 20 June 1829, at sea. Discharged 28 June 1829.

Folios 5-7: David Murdoch, aged 19, Convict; disease or hurt, pneumonia. Put on sick list, 24 June 1829, at sea. Discharged 17 July 1829.

Folio 7: James Quin, aged 35, Guard; disease or hurt, synocha. Put on sick list, 20 July 1829, at sea. Discharged to duty, 30 July 1829.

Folios 7-8: Timothy Smith, aged 21, Convict; disease or hurt, pneumonia. Put on sick list, 3 August 1829, at sea. Discharged to duty, 13 August 1829.

Folios 8-10: Joseph Hobbs, aged 25, Convict; disease or hurt, phthisis. Put on sick list, 13 October 1829, at sea. Discharged to the convict hospital at Sydney, 9 November 1829.

Folios 10-12: Thomas [Beck], aged 37, Convict; disease or hurt, dysentery. Put on sick list, 16 October. Discharged to the convict hospital at Sydney, 9 November.

Folios 12-14: George Eastman, aged 49, Convict; disease or hurt, dysentery. Put on sick list, 25 October 1829, at sea. Died 3 November 1829, at sea.

Folios 14-15: Thomas Ray, aged 33, Convict; disease or hurt, diarrhoea accompanied with symptoms of scurvy. Put on sick list, 25 October 1829, at sea. Died 29 November 1829, at sea.

Folios 15-16: Thomas Riley, aged 19, Convict; disease or hurt, dysentery. Put on sick list, 4 November 1829, at sea. Discharged to the convict hospital at Sydney, 9 November 1829.

Folios 16-17: Thomas Leathead, aged 25, Convict; disease or hurt, dysentery. Put on sick list, 6 November 1829, at sea. Discharged to the convict hospital at Sydney, 9 November 1829.

Folio 18: Blank.

Folio 19: Abstract of the preceding journal, being a summary of all the cases contained therein, nosologically arranged. There are 15 cases in all; Synocha, 1; Pneumonia, 2; Dysentery, 4, of which 1 died on board; Diarrhoea, 4; Phthisis, 1; Scurvy, 1, who died on board; Ulcers, 1; Vulnus, 1.

Folio 20: Surgeon's general remarks. 'Convicts and guard healthy during the voyage'. Also gives the medium temperatures at sea for each month of the voyage. Signed, James Osborne, Surgeon.
