Description

Medical and surgical journal of the convict ship Lady Nugent from 7 November 1834 to 27 April 1835 by Oliver Sproule, Surgeon, during which time the said ship was employed in the Transport Service.

Folios 1-4: James Rowlands, aged 46; case number 1; disease or hurt, anasarca. Put on sick list, 12 December 1834 at sea.

Folio 4: Samuel Hickey, aged 19, convict; case number 2; disease or hurt, pneumonia. Put on sick list, 12 December 1834 at sea; discharged 16 December 1834.

Folios 5-7: William Matthews, aged 20, convict; case number 3; disease or hurt, pleuritis. Put on sick list, 20 December 1834 at sea; discharged 28 February 1835.

Folios 7-9: William Anderson, aged 35, convict; case number 4; disease or hurt, dyspepsia. Put on sick list, 28 January 1835 at sea; 'the sight of land, however, did him more good than all the medicine in the world, for he got quite stout during the short period the prisoners were detained on board after our arrival'.

Folios 9-11: Thomas Wilson, aged 21, convict; case number 5; disease or hurt, synocha. Put on sick list, 6 February 1835 at sea; discharged 20 March 1835 cured.

Folio 11: Richard Tomlinson, aged 22, convict; case number 6; disease or hurt, pneumonia. Put on sick list, 11 February 1835 at sea; discharged 17 February 1835.

Folios 12-13: George Dixon, aged 23, convict; case number 7; disease or hurt, scurvy. Put on sick list, 23 February 1835 at sea; discharged 26 March 1835 cured.

Folios 13-14: Henry Jenkins, aged 67, convict; case number 8; disease or hurt, dropsy. Put on sick list, 27 February 1835 at sea; discharged 9 April 1835.

Folio 15: James Dallon, aged 24, convict; case number 9; disease or hurt, phlegmon. Put on sick list, 17 March 1835 at sea; discharged 9 April 1835.

Folio 16: Isaac Colecroft, aged 43; case number 10; disease or hurt, dyspepsia. Put on sick list, 17 March 1835 at sea; discharged 9 April 1835.

Folio 17: William Atkins, aged 18, convict; case number 11; disease or hurt, scorbutic diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 7 April 1835 at sea; died.

Folio 18: signed Oliver Sproule, Surgeon and Superintendent.

Folios 19-22: Blank.

Folio 23: a numerical abstract of the medical cases mentioned in the journal, nosologically arranged.

Folios 24-25: Surgeon's general remarks. On 20 November [1834] 100 male convicts were embarked from the Justitia Hulk at Woolwich, and 60 from the Ganymede Hulk at the same place, all in apparent good health and condition. On the 26th [November 1834] 100 were sent on board from the Fortitude Hulk at Chatham and 20 six convict boys from the Euryalus Hulk at Chatham who were also in good health and condition making the total altogether 286.
