Description

Medical and surgical journal of the convict ship John Barry from 10 March to 16 August 1834 by John Osborne, surgeon, during which time the said ship was employed in conveying prisoners from England to Van Dieman's Land.

Folio 1: John Ward, aged 18, convict; case number 1; disease or hurt, wound of scalp by falling down the fore hatchway into the hold. Put on sick list, 3 April 1834 at Sheerness; discharged 18 April 1834 well.

Folio 2: William Thomas, aged 24, convict; case number 2; disease or hurt, pyrexia. Put on sick list, 24 April 1834 at sea; discharged 29 April 1834 cured.

Folio 2: Edward Fletcher, aged 30, convict; case number 3; disease or hurt, pyrexia. Put on sick list, 10 May 1834 at sea; discharged 16 May 1834 cured.

Folio 3: John Gover, aged 26; case number 4; disease or hurt, dysentery. Put on sick list, 20 May 1834 at sea; discharged 4 June 1834 cured.

Folio 3: John Lowder, aged 23; case number 5; disease or hurt, dysentery. Put on sick list, 25 May 1834 at sea; discharged 10 June 1834 cured.

Folio 3: John Fleming, aged 30; case number 6; disease or hurt, pyrexia. Put on sick list, 25 May 1834 at sea.

Folio 4: Joseph Chamberlain, aged 30; case number 7; disease or hurt, pneumonia. Put on sick list, 4 June 1834 at sea; discharged 14 June 1834 cured.

Folio 4: Thomas Gardner, aged 37; case number 8; disease or hurt, pyrexia. Put on sick list, 5 June 1834 at sea; died 14 June 1834.

Folio 5: Samuel Gaskin, aged 40; case number 9; disease or hurt, dysentery. Put on sick list, 16 June 1834 at sea; discharged 28 June 1834 cured.

Folio 5: James Dearden, aged 43; case number 10; disease or hurt, dysentery. Put on sick list, 18 June 1834 at sea; discharged 3 July 1834 cured.

Folio 5: Frs [Francis?] Hotham, aged 26; case number 11; disease or hurt, dysentery. Put on sick list, 20 June 1834 at sea; discharged 2 July 1834 cured.

Folio 6: John Morgan, aged 27; case number 12; disease or hurt, debility. Put on sick list, 14 July 1834 at sea; died 27 July 1834.

Folio 6: James Cole, aged 36; case number 13; disease or hurt, scurvy. Put on sick list, 20 July 1834 at sea; landed in improved health on 16 August 1834 with the other prisoners at Hobart Town.

Folio 7: James Smytt?, aged 40; case number 13; disease or hurt, scurvy. Put on sick list, 24 July 1834 at sea; landed on 16 August 1834 with the other prisoners.

Folio 7: James Roberts, George King, Thomas Deveny and Charles Hartwill; case number 14; disease or hurt, scurvy. Put on sick list, 24-25 July 1834 at sea; landed on 16 August 1834 with the other prisoners.

Folio 8: Louis Mare, aged 44, convict; case number 15; disease or hurt, dysentery. Put on sick list, 27 July 1834 at sea; discharged 12 August 1834 cured.

Folio 9: a numerical abstract of the medical cases mentioned in the journal, nosologically arranged.

Folios 10-11: Surgeon's general remarks. The ship John Barry sailed from England for Van Dieman's Landsman with 320 male convicts in April 1834, which together with the crew and military guard gave her a compliment of 412 persons on board. Found nitre and lime juice very effectual in arresting the progress of incipient scurvy, although once formed am of the opinion that a change of air to the shore with nourishing and vegetable diet is absolutely necessary to effect a cure.
