Medical journal of the John, convict ship from 24 April to 24 September 1829 by John Love, surgeon and superintendent, during which time the said ship was employed on a passage to New South Wales.
Folios 1-2: case no 1, John Wright, aged 32, prisoner, taken ill unknown; sick or hurt, diarrhoea, griping and frequent calls to stool with tenesmus; put on sick list 27 May 1829, discharged 29 May 1829 cured.
Folios 2-5: case no 2, John Birmingham, aged 48, prisoner, taken ill unknown; sick or hurt, haemoptysis, cough and discharge some time [with] blood; put on sick list 23 June 1829, discharged 7 July 1829 cured.
Folios 6-7: case no 3, Allen McLean, aged 18, prisoner, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, fever, headache pain in the eyeballs and thirst, great heat of the skin; put on sick list 27 June 1829, discharged 1 July 1829 cured, on 4 July his bowels has been costive for the last two days.
Folios 8-13: case no 4, William Tuller, aged 26, prisoner, taken ill unknown; sick or hurt, general debility, pain in the limbs and in different parts of the body; put on sick list 13 July 1829, sent 14 September 1829 to general hospital, where he rapidly recovered health and strength and was discharged.
Folios 14-16: case no 5 and 6, Peter McQuirk, aged 24, prisoner, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, pneumonia, severe cough and attacked with difficult respiration; put on sick list 3 September 1829, discharged 18 September 1829 cured.
