Description

Medical journal of the Gilmore, convict ship from 8 October 1831 to 29 March 1832 by George Roberts, surgeon and superintendent, during which time the ship was employed in transporting convicts to Van Dieman's Land.

Folios 3-5: James Chaplain, aged 23, convict, taken ill at Mother Bank; sick or hurt, rheumatism, a stout make and full habit complaining of severe pains in his upper and lower extremities much increased during the night, has irritation of stomach from seasickness; put on sick list 11 November 1831, discharged 26 February 1821.

Folios 5-6: Robert West, aged 23, convict, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, epilepsia, has for several years been subject to epileptic fit, since arriving within the tropics he has had frequent and severe attacks after each attack he is left in a langoured and debilitated state unable to move; put on sick list 10 December 1831, discharged 31 January 1832.

Folios 6-8: George Glover, aged 26, convict, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, typhus metior, headache attended with occasional chills, not succeeded with increased heat of skin has a degree of lassitude and debility with loss of appetite, bowels slow; put on sick list 23 December 1831, discharged 19 February 1832.

Folio 8: William Hall, aged 29, convict, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, diarrhoea, complaining of griping pains in his bowels with frequent purging of a thin sliming matter mixed with scybala, pulse 74, heat of skin natural, tongue white and dry; put on sick list 24 December 1831, discharged 22 January 1832.

Folio 9: John Rush, aged 39, convict, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, synocha, slight headache attended with alternate heats and chills, great lassitude and drawsiness; put on sick list 4 February 1832, discharged 19 February 1832.

Folio 10: William Applebee, aged 16, convict, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, phthisis, complaining of the symptoms of common catarrh, stated that he had vomited a quantity of blood early in the morning, he was far advanced in consumption, had a short troublesome cough with copious expectoration of pus attended with shooting pains through his chest, [he was put on] hospital diet, 15th [February] worse in every expect, high degree of heptic fever, expectoration of fine pus, he has every appearance of sinking, 16th [February] has passed a very restless night pulse weak and fluttering, skin covered with cold sweat appears insensible, he continued to sink gradually and at 7 pm. expired; put on sick list 7 February 1832, died 16 February 1832.

Folio 11: numerical abstract of cases mentioned in the journal, nosologically arranged.

Folio 12: Surgeon's general remarks. The number of convicts embarked were 224 at Sheerness between 22-24 October 1831.
