Description

Medical and surgical journal of HM transport ship Enchantress from 8 March to 5 August 1833 by James Osborne, surgeon and superintendent, during which time the said ship was employed in a voyage from England to Van Dieman's Land.

Folios 1-3: John Holeman, aged 33, convict; case number 1; disease or hurt, pneumonia. Came on board from the Leviathan hulk. Put on sick list, 1 April 1833 at Spithead. Discharged 10 April 1833 cured.

Folios 4-6: Charles Deveril, aged 19, convict; case number 2; disease or hurt, culculi in the uretis. Put on sick list, 18 May 1833 at sea. Discharged 28 May 1833 cured.

Folio 7: John Sarrence, aged 58; case number 3; disease or hurt, scurvy. Put on sick list, 20 May 1833 at sea. Discharged 5 August 1833 to the convict barracks.

Folio 8: William Blackburn, aged 75; case number 4; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 15 July 1833 at sea. Died 20 July 1833.

Folios 9-10: John Smith, aged 50; case number 5; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 18 July 1833 at sea. Discharged 5 August 1833 cured.

Folios 10-11: William [Purdy?], aged 27; case number 6; disease or hurt, dysentery. Put on sick list, 19 July 1833 at sea. Discharged 30 July 1833 cured.

Folio 11: a numerical abstract of the medical cases mentioned in the journal.

Folio 12: Surgeon's general remarks.
