Folios 35-39: Surgeon’s general remarks: The male convict ship Emily fitted out at Deptford and having embarked the Guard over convicts there. She dropped down to Woolwich on the afternoon of 15 June 1842 and next day 160 convicts were embarked – i.e. 80 from the Justitia and 80 from the Warrior hulks; 17th June 1842 left Woolwich; 19th June 1842 anchored at Sheerness; 20th embarked 80 convicts from the Fortitude hulk at Chatham, making a total of 240. The convicts were clean, and to all appearance enjoying a fair state of health who are on the brink of stumbling into maladies of the most fatal character. It is a fact, that, the provision (pork in particular) issued to the convicts, guard and crew on board previous to reaching the Cape of Good Hope – although possible, was of very inferior quality. It is but fair to state, with the single exception of the Master being an habitual drunkard, the Emily passed through the Downs on her voyage to Tasmania on 30 June – under as favourable circumstances as could be wished.

Folios 37-38: Copy of the sick book.
