Medical journal of HM convict ship Edward, 7 March to 9 September 1834 by Joseph [Staret], surgeon and superintendent, during which time the ship was employed in a voyage to Hobart Town, Van Dieman's Land.
Folios 1-5: Mary Creed, aged 28; case number 1; sick or hurt, loss of power in the lower limbs. Sent on board from the prison in Horsemonger Lane. Had been confined previously to bed for nearly three years; put on sick list [not stated], discharged 5 September 1834 at Hobart Town.
Folios 5-6: Eliza Sid [Sidnum?], aged 21; case number 2; sick or hurt, obstipatio; put on sick list, 19 May 1834, discharged 10 June 1834 cured.
Folios 6-7: Mary Herring, aged 24; case number 3; sick or hurt, pneumonia; put on sick list, 3 June 1834 at sea, discharged 30 June 1834 cured.
Folio 7: Sarah Tyson, aged 17; case number 4; sick or hurt, pneumonia; put on sick list, 4 July 1834 at sea, discharged 18 July 1834 cured.
Folios 7-8: Martha Brooks, aged 17; case number 5; sick or hurt, hamatemesis; put on sick list, 4 July 1834 at sea, discharged 28 July 1834 cured.
Folio 9: Mary Gillard, aged 19 or 23; case number 6; sick or hurt, urticaria; put on sick list, 4 July 1834 at sea, discharged 31 July 1834 cured.
Folio 10: Mary Wait, aged 22 or 29; case number 7; sick or hurt, diarrhoea; put on sick list, 8 July 1834 at sea, discharged 24 July 1834 cured.
Folio 10: Ann McKenna, aged 25, prisoner; case number 8; sick or hurt, rheumatism; put on sick list, 8 July 1834 at sea, discharged 1 August 1834 cured.
Folio 11: numerical abstract of cases mentioned in the journal, nosologically arranged (blank form).
Folios 12-14: Surgeon's general remarks. No prisoners sent on board until 1 April [1834], the whole consisting of 151 women, besides children were received by 16 April [1834] except one who was sent from the hospital at Woolwich where she had been left sick, who was embarked on 22 April. The ship remained at Woolwich till the 5 May [1834]. The prisoners came on board in small numbers, at different times, and as some come from considerable distances, York for example, they are much fatigued and not, infrequently have catarrhs.
