Medical and surgical journal of HM convict ship Diamond from 20 October 1837 to 20 April 1838 by William McDowill, surgeon, during which time the said ship was employed on a passage to New South Wales.
Folio 1: Daily sick list, names and details follow:
Folios 1-3: Catherine Raygan, aged 30; case number 1; disease or hurt, accident to right leg caused by a cask rolling in a gale of wind when on deck. Put on sick list, 14 December 1837 at sea. Discharged 1 February 1838.
Folios 4-10: Mary Brown, aged 21; case number 2; disease or hurt, enteritis. Put on sick list, 29 December 1837 at sea. Died 23 January 1838.
Folios 10-13: Catherine Rooney, aged 7; case number 3; disease or hurt, icterus. Put on sick list, 8 January 1838 at sea. Died 22 January 1838.
Folios 13-15: Honora Carey, aged 30, free woman; case number 4; disease or hurt, atrophia. Put on sick list, 26 January 1838 at sea. Discharged 24 February 1838.
Folios 15-16: Judith McConnell, aged 7; case number 5; disease or hurt, epilispia. Put on sick list, 1 February 1838 at sea. Died 12 February 1838.
Folios 16-17: Mary McManus, aged 22; case number 6; disease or hurt, icterus. Put on sick list, 10 February 1838 at sea. Discharged 4 March 1838.
Folio 18: Sarah Peacock, aged 18; case number 7; disease or hurt, rheumatismus. Put on sick list, 18 February 1838 at sea. Discharged 23 February 1838.
Folios 18-19: A numerical abstract of the medical cases mentioned in the journal, nosologically arranged. Folio 20; Surgeon's general remarks. The number of female convicts embarked on board were 162 received from the penitentiary in Dublin, all in tolerable good health, with 27 of their children of different ages.
